Chieftain Perhaps no vehicle epitomises the word 'Tank' as the Chieftain, the British tank of 1959. The Chieftain was designed to replace the already 15-year-old Centurion in British Service. Keeping the same bogie suspension as in the Centurion, the main gun is the L11A5. Original marks had a ranging machinegun fitted but this was soon replaced with a laser rangefinder. Later upgrades incluse the Stillbrew composite armor package on the turret front, and the IR sight in the box on the left side of the turret later being replaced by the Thermal Observation Gun Sight. Chieftain has been
exported to,and seen action with the armed forces of Iraq, Iran, Jordan,
Kuwait, and Oman. In UK service, it was supplanted by Challenger, and
only withdrawn with the introduction of Challenger 2. Many of the Chieftains
were then sold to Pakistan. |
